Mary Nerren

Mary Nerren is a Cincinnati-based pianist specializing in collaborative piano and private music lessons. She promotes a classical music foundation that provides technical skills transferable to many genres and styles. Her teaching philosophy is to provide effective, sustainable, and fun practice habits to facilitate life-long learning. An emphasis on proper technique enables her students to reach their musical goals free from discomfort or injury. She believes knowledge of music theory and music history are essential in rounding out a music education and enjoys incorporating these subjects in creative ways. Her additional skills in violin, chamber music, and vocal coaching enable her to offer a variety of lessons and a broad perspective to her students.

Students can expect a personalized approach to their goals, whether learning an instrument for the first time, preparing for a collegiate music audition, or anything in between. Ample performance and evaluation opportunities are available for students and encouraged to further their development.

Born and raised in Johnson City, Tennessee, Mary was immersed in music from a young age. She has taught piano and violin at local music academies since the age of 15. An alum of the East Tennessee State University Precollege program, she experienced competition success as a teen, including winning the first prize in the 2017 MTNA Nationals Piano Duet competition after winning at the regional and state levels. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Lee University where she was named the 2021-22 Presser Scholar and departmental award winner. While at Lee, she served as a music theory and music history tutor, choir section leader, first violinist in the symphony, and a frequent church musician. She is a member of the Alpha Chi national college honor society and the Pi Kappa Lambda music honors society. She was a winner of the 2021 Charleston International Music Competition, winner of the 2019 Blair Academy for the Arts Grand Virtuoso Piano Competition, and second prize winner of the 2019 Nashville Steinway Artist Junior Piano Competition.

Mary is a graduate assistant of vocal and instrumental accompanying at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where she is pursuing her Master of Music in Collaborative Piano.
