Mary Tan promotes a classical foundation that provides technical skills transferable to many genres and styles. Her teaching philosophy is to provide effective, sustainable, and fun practice habits to facilitate life-long learning. An emphasis on proper technique empowers her students to reach their musical goals free from discomfort or injury. Students can expect a personalized approach to their goals, whether they are learning piano for the first time, preparing for a college music audition, or anything in between. Mary organizes regular performance opportunities for students to further their musical and personal development.
Mary holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Lee University where she was named the Presser Scholar and departmental award winner, and earned her Master's degree in Collaborative Piano from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where she worked as a graduate assistant of vocal and instrumental accompanying. She is a member of the Alpha Chi national college honor society and the Pi Kappa Lambda music honors society. She was a winner of the 2021 Charleston International Music Competition, winner of the 2019 Blair Academy for the Arts Grand Virtuoso Piano Competition, and second prize winner of the 2019 Nashville Steinway Artist Junior Piano Competition.
Mary lives in Cincinnati with her husband Ian and their dear cat Siggy. She works as the pianist and assistant director for the Sycamore High School Choral Program, teaches private piano lessons, and occasionally performs in the area as a freelance collaborative pianist.
