Matt has been teaching music since 2004 and has been a member of the CMA faculty since 2007. As a piano/keyboard teacher, Matt specializes in teaching beginners, and piano as a secondary instrument. Believing an understanding of the keyboard can be a helpful foundation for anyone interested in music, Matt teaches keyboard as a gateway to broader musical understanding, and as an invaluable tool for understanding harmony, melody, composition, and music theory. For aspiring composers and songwriters, he is also fluent in using the keyboard as a composition aid, and as a way to interface with modern notation and sequencing software.
Matt’s decade worth of teaching experience has included working with students with a variety of backgrounds and musical interests. Believing that the study of music can be used by anyone as a tool for personal growth, and that everyone should pursue music to their own ends, Matt enjoys teaching beginners and casual musicians as well as more advanced students. He works with students to conceive and attain their own individual musical goals, and to move at a comfortable pace.
Matt is also CMA’s electric and double bass instructor, and teaches guitar as well. He holds a BM in Jazz Studies from UC’s College-Conservatory of Music.
