Matt Holt

Matt began teaching in 2004 at Moeller Music in West Chester, and joined the staff of CMA in 2007. Believing that the study of music can be used by anyone as a tool for personal growth, and that everyone should pursue music to their own ends, Matt enjoys teaching beginners and casual musicians as well as more advanced students. He works with students to conceive and attain their own individual musical goals, while also maintaining a strong emphasis on good foundational musicianship. Matt also believes that each student has a unique way of learning, and works with students to develop a curriculum that fits their individual needs and learning styles. Over the course of his decade of teaching experience, he has had experience with numerous teaching methods, and developed a unique set of teaching tools and materials to help students learn and gain a strong footing in musical fundamentals. He also offers a variety of options for lesson length, frequency, and payment, to fit each students learning style, schedule, and budget.

Matt holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Studies from CCM, where he performed with a variety of ensembles, including the CCM Jazz Ensemble, the Repertory Orchestra, and in the pit orchestras for numerous CCM musical theater productions.  Although his degree is in Jazz Studies, while at CCM Matt studied classically under the direction of Albert Lazlo, and with Rick Vizachero of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Matt’s teaching is also informed by his diverse performance experience, which has given him a keen insight into the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed as a bassist in a variety of musical situations.  As a working bassist in the Cincinnati area, Matt has had a wide range of musical experiences.  Matt spent four years playing at the Dee Felice Café as the bassist for The New Sleepcat Band.  He was a founding member of the Cincinnati-based Americana band Hickory Robot and can be heard on the band’s debut album Firefly. As a classical player, Matt is an active member of several local orchestras, and has served as both principal and assistant principal bassist with the Hamilton/Fairfield Symphony Orchestra. He also performs with Emmy award winning singer/songwriter Rick Lisak, and appears on Rick’s 2014 album “Americana”.  As a bass guitarist, he can be heard with the Cincinnati rock band The Grove and playing soul jazz with the Steve Mutter Trio.  Matt’s freelance performance career has included dates with such artists as Mike Wade, Phil DeGreg, and Steve Schmidt.
